Plastic Omnium becomes the official sponsor of Race for Water

Plastic Omnium shows its commitment to the energy transition and protection of the oceans from plastic pollution

Plastic Omnium is partnering with the Race for Water Foundation, becoming the official sponsor of Race for Water, a ship powered by a combination of renewable energies-: solar, wind and hydrogen-. This revolutionary vessel left Lorient in April 2017 for a 5-year world tour to promote the energy transition. It is committed to preserving the oceans from plastic pollution.

Contributing to scientific knowledge, building awareness and educating, and implementing sustainable solutions designed through innovative technologies: these are the three aims that the Plastic Omnium is proud to support during the Race for Water odyssey, which will span five continents and stop at thirty-five different ports by July 2021.

In addition to this sponsorship, Plastic Omnium also confirms its commitment in the field of fuel cells and hydrogen propulsion. The Group’s investments have grown to €100 million in two years, and will be doubled by 2020.

The Group already has an electric car fitted with a fuel cell, which is powered by a 350 bar-pressurized hydrogen tank. The vehicle, which has already traveled over 150,000 kilometers, has a range doubled thanks to this system. Plastic Omnium will unveil the new fuel cell demonstrator electric car in mid-2019.

Discover Plastic Omnium's latest innovations at NAIAS Detroit Auto Show 2018: smart bumpers and tailgates

Plastic Omnium is presenting its latest innovations: more intelligent bumpers, lighter and more reactive tailgates,
illustrating its innovation strategy for a safer, cleaner and connected car.

PLASTIC OMNIUM HAS DEVELOPED MORE INTELLIGENT BUMPERS WITH EMBEDDED INTELLIGENCE:

• Integrated radar
Bumpers include optimally mounted and fully integrated radars, to provide first-class performance thanks to electromagnetic-wave permeable plastics.

• Innovative front grille
Plastic Omnium has developed a three-function front grille that incorporates new technologies: a chrome finish compatible with radars, De-icing system to ensure that the grille works in all weathers. An integrated lighting system based on flexible optical fibers.

• Impact detection and absorption system
Plastic Omnium offers an impact absorption module that incorporates a host of functions ranging from innovative detection systems to improved impact management. The bumper also includes an active aerodynamic system. It is also lighter, reducing CO2 emissions.

PLASTIC OMNIUM HAS DEVELOPED  A LIGHTER AND MORE REACTIVE TAILGATE:

Safety and personalization
Plastic Omnium has developed a new generation tailgate, made from high-performance composites. Thanks to the light plastic materials, many new aerodynamic and interactive functions can be integrated. The tailgate can display messages to “talk” to its surroundings. Many different messages can be displayed on a transparent area that also serves to display the driver’s own personalized messages.

• Interactive tailgate
Solutions have been developed that enable the tailgate to interact in three ways: the facial recognition system to open the vehicle; The “touch and open” and “touch and stop” systems work through conductive paint.  The obstacle avoidance system for ground level or higher levels to avoid damage when opening the trunk.

• More aerodynamic tailgate
Active technologies such as an active rear spoiler, a side spoiler and a mobile diffuser under the floor, improve aerodynamics and allow a reduction of 2g / km of CO2.

Discover Plastic Omnium's latest innovations at NAIAS Detroit Auto Show 2018

Plastic Omnium, the global leader in low emission fuel and exhaust treatment systems is presenting its latest innovations: PHEV and Hydrogen solutions illustrating its innovation strategy for a cleaner energy.

PLASTIC OMNIUM INNOVATIONS FOR CLEANER ENERGY

• Solution for hybrid motor
Plastic Omnium offers solutions for plug-in hybrids. The INWIN fuel system’s optimal architecture withstands increased gasoline vapor pressure when the vehicle is running on electricity. And TANKTRONIC®’s innovative, simplified architecture includes an E-valve with an electronic control device.

• Water injection system
First designed to improve engine performance, the water injection system significantly reduces fuel consumption, which in turn reduces CO2 emissions. A technology that can be adapted for all gasoline vehicles

• Clean diesel: the SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction)
The technology involves vaporizing AdBlue®into the exhaust which, when it comes into contact with diesel exhaust gases, generates a chemical reaction that transforms polluting nitrogen oxides into harmless nitrogen and water vapor.

• Clean diesel: Dual SCR
Suited for new generations of Diesel engines, our Dual SCR system combines benefits from both AdBlue® and amoniac gaz direct injection to reduce NOx. Plastic Omnium’s technology improves SCR efficiency during engine start-up and in urban driving conditions.

PLASTIC OMNIUM INNOVATIONS FOR TOMORROW’S ENERGY

• A high-pressure hydrogen storage system.
The hydrogen is stored in tanks, made of composite materials and plastics that can withstand internal stresses. The tank is made from a thermoplastic sealing liner of around 5-mm and a thick carbon-fiber layer that takes up the mechanical stresses created by internal pressure in the tank.

• Fuel cell system: A zero-emission solution
One focus of innovation is to power electric vehicle motors with a fuel cell. The cell converts oxygen and tank-stored hydrogen into electrical energy to propel the vehicle.
The system discharges nothing other than water and heat.

Plastic Omnium presents its latest innovations at NAIAS Detroit Auto Show for a safe and sustainable mobility

Plastic Omnium’s goal is to offer automakers cutting-edge equipment and solutions that will bring to life tomorrow’s clean, connected car, embedding innovations in a sustainable development approach.

Lighter vehicles

Making vehicles lighter reduces their CO2 emissions, Plastic Omnium “lightweights” its exterior products while offering excellent mechanical performance and robustness. Reducing components weight is all the more vital for hybrid and electric vehicles as it increases their driving range and compensates for the battery weight.

Plastic Omnium’s expert engineers also offer automakers solutions to optimize passive and active aerodynamics, further reducing CO2 emissions.

The energy mix revolution

Plastic Omnium is the leader in energy storage and fuel systems, whether for standard gasoline, diesel vehicles and hybrids. Continuous improvement programs are active and cover all storage systems needs. Plastic Omnium is also working on alternative energy solutions such as hydrogen storage, fuel cells and supercapacitors. Plastic Omnium recently acquired two companies operating in the field of propulsion by hydrogen fuel cells: Swiss Hydrogen and Optimum CPV. These acquisitions reinforce the positioning of Plastic Omnium as an electric propulsion player.

More connected than ever

The market for connected cars is on the increase. Plastic Omnium’s development strategy is staying ahead of market changes.

Plastic Omnium is contributing to tomorrow’s intelligent car thanks to its expertise in function integration, backed by the outstanding electromagnetic transparency performance of plastics. The company’s exterior components will incorporate and protect a large number of radars, lidars and other sensors that will offer even greater styling flexibility on top of connectivity protective features.
